Michael was an original member of Mungo Jerry from 1969 to 1970. The group played a mixture of mainly blues based music ranging from good-time jug band music to rockabilly. In 1970 they had a huge hit, "In the Summertime" which is almost universally known, even by those 'youngsters' who weren't born in 1970. The song, written by the lead singer Ray Dorset, remains popular with DJ's throughout the world, has sold some 30 million copies to date and still receives an enormous number of airplays.
Although dubbed 'an overnight success' by some of the media, the band's success was based on solid gigging experience and it had already acquired a reputation on the college circuit as an exciting live band able to enthuse audiences with an original acoustic sound. MJ still has an active international fan club.
"I am still in touch with Ray and earlier last year we got together for a couple of gigs to celebrate the 35th anniversary of ITS.
More recently, we have been in the studio recording our 'reunion' album which will be released later this year. The aim was to have fun in the spirit of the original MJ. Of course we are now older and, hopefully, wiser but we think we have created some music which others will enjoy - different from the original but with some of the magic quality which made the band so successful in 1970."
